Experimenting with my first batch of soap using mostly beef tallow. This is some tallow that i rendered myself, from a half cow that we bought late last year. I'll be cutting it tomorrow, then let it cure for 6 weeks. Up until now i've been using the same recipe, but decided to try something new. #grownostr #SoapMaking #homesteading MakeYourOwn

What's the recipe? We've ended up wtih some tallow and were wondering about soap...

For this one, i'm trying 62% tallow, 27% virgin coconut oil, and 11% olive oil. I'll also be trying 100% tallow soon. I have read that adding the other two fats gives a better lather. We'll see.

You can plug your amounts into a soap calculator, and it will tell you how much lye and water to use.

SoapCalc--who knew? 😃

Yeah, there's lots of sites you can use for that.

Got some homework to do...but never knew a) sites like that existed and b) it can get complicated! 😃

Yeah, just start with a small batch first, and just know that your recipe measurements need to be accurate, no eye-balling it. Good idea to use kitchen scale.

Curious to hear how it turns out! It's been a while since I've made soap, but I've been hearing a lot of good things about tallow for skincare. I have some herb infused tallow I made waiting to go into salves.

Nice! I've made a tallow body butter that i liked. It was just a tiny bit gritty, but otherwise good.
