I had two people try to onboard to nostr recently and they both seemingly had a bad experience.

One could not get greeted by anyone or find content to engage with. The other had technical issues where their account seemingly wasn’t instantiated right. (Maybe both had this issue).

But idk nobody cares. It’s survivors bias I suppose. We all got set up early on and forgot what it was like because in the early days everyone just followed everyone

I created a new account recently and had the opposite experience; everything worked flawlessly and had very positive first interactions.

How did you onboard them? (What did you say, what app, etc)

Did they write an #introductions post?

One onboarded to nostr:npub12vkcxr0luzwp8e673v29eqjhrr7p9vqq8asav85swaepclllj09sylpugg . Is an introductions post required? If so, that should be pushed by the UI of the app! Is it a full proof method to get plugged in?

The other onboarded to nostr:npub18m76awca3y37hkvuneavuw6pjj4525fw90necxmadrvjg0sdy6qsngq955 and their account is actually bugged (doesn’t show following or follows). Maybe profile didn’t get instantiated in relays fully?

nostr:npub1jmqznxuxxxrnaj3m7esjrwauxmvg742ltj0gsgumlmtxukzq99yqfrl6g5 brought up a good point. Could it be that not creating a lightning wallet flags you as a bot? Or that new people are just inherently outside the WOT and get excluded?

I guess the software is still in beta or whatever.

Mirrors my experience (outside a few infrequent interactions). I’m shouting in the wind. Guessing I’m on wrong relays or new users can’t have good wot score or not caring about setting up a zap wallet has me flagged a bot.

I actually don’t see any relays listed on your profile! I bet there is an issue there. Which app did you make the account on?

Coracle. On 10 relays. (I don’t see the option to publish them on profile…).

This note showed up on these within a couple mins.

Hmm… so my friend signed up on Damus and his account seems not to have instantiated right. Because I don’t see following and followers or relays on his account when I view on Damus.

And you signed up on Coracle, but I don’t see relays on your profile when I view on Damus..

There’s a but in damus where it doesn’t confirm contact list creation. It can happen if the connectivity is poor during signup. Just needs to sign up again.

In certain circumstances, but it doesn't sound like that's what's happening here

Thank you all for investigating !

FWIW, it’s like this thread shook something loose….. some people even took the time to go back and find and answer some old posts. Very kind.

nostr:npub1zafcms4xya5ap9zr7xxr0jlrtrattwlesytn2s42030lzu0dwlzqpd26k5 so ditch the account and make a new one? Wouldn’t Damus refresh the profile every time a change is made like a person following them or them following someone else?

If Im reading this correct nostr:npub1jmqznxuxxxrnaj3m7esjrwauxmvg742ltj0gsgumlmtxukzq99yqfrl6g5 created his keys using coracle.

From looking at his profile from two apps other than Damus, the relay list limbo is not an issue (rather damus does not currently recognize the relay list kind coracle uses. I created a damus issue for this).

I see no need for Mitnev to ditch his keys.
