My Grandfather (Lord rest his soul) used to run a small shop out of his living room, he would leave the window slightly open and people would just tell em what they wanted.

He had easy access to cigarettes from the UK, and that's mostly what people came to him for, but he sold newspapers and aftershave and boxes of chocolate etc.

You would be arrested for that now.
