i used to do fui (futuristic/fantasy user interface) for film and tv. it’s true, none of it has to be functional as long as it looks complicated and cool.
Reminds me of genomics (my field). Hollywood crime scene lab: sample dropped off at 8AM - we'll have the genetic match by lunch. Real life: 1 week later sequence alignments finally completed, analysis to can start.
