The entire Bible can be summed up as God telling Hebrews (usually Judeans) to do a thing, them refusing, being punished, doing it, then a few decades/centuries later going against it even harder and being punished even harder.

God made it clear he would side with pagans over Israel and Judea if he thought they were more righteous, and he did so repeatedly.
