I disagree. And now with the emergence of Lightning wallets like Zeus, this is a non-issue.

The cost of running your own node is about $5 per month with the most inefficient hardware. Maybe $4.99 for monero node...

Using a VPS is not running your own node, whether is a Bitcoin node or a Monero node.

You are paying someone else to run it for you.

Trusted third parties are security holes.

Your original argument said nothing about running a monero node. Also where are you getting hardware that costs $5/month

Well my original argument is about running your own Bitcoin node for sovereignty. Even with monero, if you are not running your own node, you are relying on a trusted third party to serve you the blockchain.

I'm not saying I run inefficient hardware. I said thats what it would cost with the most inefficient hardware.

i spent about $240 on my full node rig... it only runs bitcoin right now but it could be running CLN easily... total power consumption is max 35W and probably is running around 12W most of the time

i expect this rig to run my infra for 2 years so that is already at $5/month probably it will run for 5 years and i will have to spend another $120 to upgrade the storage in a couple yeras

thats a fair amount to spend on a full node, maybe slightly over priced but not too bad. Im sure it has more than the necessary specs.

thats very low power consumption, i dont understand how that will cost you 5 bucks a month. I used to run an old IBM Think Center from the year 2000 with 2GB RAM and a Pentium D processor running Bitcoin Core and that was using hundreds of Watts but cost about 5 bucks a month in electricity (in canadian dollars lol).

Either something is wrong or your electricity is very expensive!

no, that was the price of the hardware... the power bill is likely under $1/month - it's a HP Mini G3 35W model, 8gb memory and a 1Tb NVMe drive, with capacity to put a SATA disk in it as well, plus it has 2xUSB-C sockets, it will be great as my node rig, i mean to set up LN channels also, just a few million sats probably, and bounce my own DNS into it

just haven't had the downtime to spend, i expect a few days to get such a setup working properly

once you get started, you will be done in an hour or two. Then maybe another day for the IBD.

i already have the chain, even have a backup of the chain

no, i'm talking about lightning, that will probably take me a few days to get working right, i want to have LNURL as well, i have DNS and a reverse proxy so i figure it should all be possible, just a bit of work to learn

i learned how to use wireguard late last year... so cool to have your own personal VPN, not just VPN but all my devices can talk over this same channel so it really is like a ... virtual, private network... even when my mobile is on 4G it can directly connect to my other devices

I have used tailscale for this in some situations and its free :)

start9 also lets you run tailscale on it

https://github.com/angristan/wireguard-install

i used to wish i could set up SSH tunnels back in the day, but they are so clunky

this installer script is so dead simple you will never want to live without wireguard tunnels ever again

a few more pieces of tooling and IMO this is essential infra gear... especially a simple script to set up an SSH connection that only goes over WG, so you don't get endlessly spammed by SSH login scanners

wireguard is so dead simple i can't begin to reccommend enough to learn how to set it up

it uses much the same cryptography as nostr also, i think it uses faster ChaCha CSPRNG (rather than AES)
