From a psychological perspective such animosity is at an unconscious level. A residue from the time the Romans invaded and battled the Silures perhaps. Where i grew up in the valleys the high ground...mountains...are littered with ancient Celtic camps. Defences against the invaders. On one site there's even relics of a stone circle knows as the Welsh Stonehenge. The camps were built by the Silures. They were summer camps where they would take livestock to graze the high ground then return as winter drew in to the lower, warmer regions.
The image below is a pot found in Llyn Fawr where, on their summer journey, they would throw votive offerings into the lake.
