I'd slightly disagree on the especially Felis Catis Sylvestris.
They don't bow down to nobody. If they can't play with you, and you try to dominate them, they use the "flee" card rather than submit to your overwhelming power.
I'd say that they are not really pets when they survive off our trash, and that even the ones we bring in, they have loyalty up to the limit of their tolerance for being pushed around, which is far lower than most other domestic animals.
They are our equals, as in, they decide their position and if we don't agree, they are happy to part ways. Same way I deal with people and society.
Yes, it does get down to raw survival if you can't integrate into a hierarchy. But that's better than ignominy. Just ask a cat, that's why they are called "Pride". They are happy to be submissive, if you are merciful and reasonable.
