I don't mind private companies paying for bitcoin developer contributions, and I don't mind someone raising funds to compensate themselves or others, but to isolate a group of people and call them "bitcoin developers" to give money to will create perverse incentives, protectionism and govenance around contributions to the codebase. Charity is never simple. Best to simply defend any contributor from state action or someone that uses the state to attack a developer, and leave it at that.
