Hey everyone. My desktop just blew up last night (likely CPU or motherboard).

I'm not asking for donations, but if you'd be willing to spread the word about the open source hardware password managers that I build and sell, it'd really help me out.

https://hax0rbana.org/signet

I am an independent open source software/hardware maintainer and my dream is to be able to earn enough doing that to pay for my food and shelter.

I sell the hardware at just above cost to fund experimenting with new designs (and now, apparently, to save up for desktop computer repairs).

I'm committed to open source hardware/firmware/software and long term support!

I accept (and prefer) #bitcoin. The way my store operates is you send me your order, payment, and where you want me to ship the hardware, and I ship it there. No names, email addresses, nostr pubkeys, or any other personal data. I don't even care if you give me someone else's address. Doesn't matter to me. Also, the store uses #nostr as a back end.

So, as you can probably tell, I'm pretty committed to the nostr and bitcoin communities. Y'all are bringing back the energy of the world wide web from the 1990s and the cypherpunk movement that went with it. ❤️

I believe open-source devs will be some of the highest status individuals in society long term. Good work

My first thought when I read this was "that's preposterous!", but if you told me in the 90s that being smart and good with computers (aka, being a geek) was going to be really cool, I would have said the same thing.

And yet, here we are today. And hackers already kinda have that status, so... maybe.

Either way, I'm just going to keep doing what I love and am passionate about. 🤗

Being smart and good with tech is more than cool, it's a hugely valuable skill that 99% of people don't have, to the degree we find here (devving).

So basically you're gonna be extremely wealthy.

Check dms pls

They have to

Will do. Sorry to hear it bro. I was looking forward to a relaxing night last night and ended up having to pull and reset all of my cards/modules from my MB and do an image restore back to March 2023. Took me three hours just to be able to get my rescue media to be recognized. A good reminder of why I don’t make my PC part of my Bitcoin custody setup.

Rough. I am not great at taking regular backups, but I just happened to have done one within the last week.

I've mostly been storing things on my Nextcloud server lately and just mirroring them locally, so backups are less important, but they sure make me feel better to have them.

And the servers have redundant storage AND are backed up regularly to an offline disk.

Macrium Reflect free version and an external 3TB are a Godsend.

Hax, I have some hw for sale that comes with some of my time if you’re interested:

I've bookmarked your store. Right now I just need to get my desktop back up and running, but I could imagine getting gear from you in the future! I have a Grocy VM running on my Proxmox server and a little computer (maybe a NUC?) is planned to be the kitchen computer someday.

When I'm ready, I'll check to see if you have one first.

Reposted, wish you the best Man, what you do is great, and an example. PV! 💜🫂🍀

I have an i3 CPU (i3-9100, LGA1151) laying around that I would be willing to send you gratis if that would be of any help, provided it's not your board that blew and it works on the intel chipset.

Thanks. It's an AMD system and it's apparently the motherboard, not the CPU. 😓 So now I am shopping around for a motherboard that is compatible with #QubesOS (network, sound card, etc.).

It's less money than replacing the CPU, so that's good, but more time.

Reposted.

I already spotted this project in the past, nice!

A couple of suggestions, maybe they can improve the visibility/sales:

- Add a Buy/Donate button on the top main menu;

- Merge Overview and Getting Started in a unique homepage, adding some screeshots about the client;

Whish you the best.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll work on the site as soon as my computer is back up and running (I don't have access from my phone).

I've added the buy/donate buttons to the nav bar, added a screenshot of the client, removed the link to buy on eBay, made the page more accessible for people with screen readers, and fixed a typo.

Thanks again for the suggestions. It's not a flashy corporate looking site, but it's better than it was, and it still loads #lightning fast, without any tracking, javascript, CDNs or other such nonsense.

A hardware based password manager? I am actually interested in that - as a "last resort" for managing the most sensitive secrets I have (SSH keys, file encryption passphrases, ...).

That said, do you *have* a donation page? Sats, obvs, but whats with the people with no channel but the will to donate? ^^

❤️🙏

Donation page is here: https://hax0rbana.org/signet/store.html?pubkey=028fe8dff97df9480d37bd7fbdd300c7aab1e77e3f77647f41ae27fa69d401da26&relays=%5B%22wss://relay.damus.io%22,%22wss://nostr-pub.wellorder.net%22,%22wss://nostr.bolt.fun%22%5D

Or just send 'em to bc1qgjme0dww9e72clcdlhqgegdxfec2ujfz3z9hum

Someone suggested I make the "buy" and "donate" links more prominent on the Signet landing page and I plan on doing that so soon as I have a working desktop again.

A quick update:

1. Thank you to all who shared, zapped, offered suggestions or offered help in other ways. The community response was large, wonderful and unexpected. 🫶

2. A new CPU didn't fix it. I was skeptical, but it was too easy of a fix to not try it. On the bright side, it might be cheaper than I was expecting.

3. I ordered a new motherboard from newegg (they take bitcoin) and it'll arrive by Friday. The #Qubes hardware compatibility list tells me it'll work. I really hope it'll work without having to reinstall the O/S. 🤞

I'm going to try to stop stressin' and relax for the rest of the night. Next week, I plan on #building.

Hello, I checked out your website. I may buy your hardware, but I wanted to let you know there is a spelling error at the end of the second paragraph, word security. I’d want someone to tell me, so I’m telling you!

Thanks, it's now in the queue of updates to make to that page.

I managed to get it updated even before my computer is back up and running. Thanks again for letting me know about the typo. ✌️
