Trump has discussed recently with aides, the possibility of major changes to the United States’ participation within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which could include a prioritization on engagement for member states that spend a certain percentage of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), between 2-5%, on defense. Trump Administration Officials have stated that as part of this policy shift, the U.S. may not come to the defense of or hold military exercises with a fellow NATO member, if the country does not meet a specific defense spending threshold.
