How do you make Nostr more useful for yourself? I'm genuinely asking for advice here.

In light of recent events, I really want to start using Nostr as my means for getting news and socializing online. However, I don't want to sift through endless spam from bots and complete randoms.

Is there anything (however big or small) that you've done to make your experience here more positive and intentional? Anything you would recommend in terms of avoiding spam and misinformation? How about advice on networking with like-minded people or evangelizing Nostr to friends/family?

I'm all ~~ears~~ eyes.

I've been here for about a year and a half and it's been an incremental journey. The first few months were pretty rough but my feed is full of signal (and quality memes) now and very rarely any noise. Block those you don't like, look into the "Web of trust" relays. Make sure to follow anybody that remotely interests you, the more follows the better, engage and zap. 👍🏻

1. Private relays tend to have much higher quality content and less spam. A few bucks in fees goes a long way.

2. The "global" fee in most apps sucks, I never use it, I just use the feed of people I follow.
