I'd really love to plant tomatoes too, do I need a special quality of soil?
Not really, a clay
in my garden, but I simply pour all-purpose soil into the hole. If you have a few tomatoes then of course you can buy soil for vegetables, but it is much more expensive. From time to time it is good to apply fertilizer to tomatoes, because they are voracious and remember to water.
P.S. Last year I had tall tomatoes in large pots and they also were fine.

I just order a ton (literally a ton) of compost every year and spread it in thick layer on top of the patch(es). With some plants I dig and fill a hole with it.
At least in czech republic there are places that make compost as a part of their business. It's not expensive (~$50 per cubic meter = slightly less than 1 ton), though the transport can be more expensive than the compost itself.
The biggest hurdle (for me) is that they just dump it in front of the house, take your money and say adios. I have a row house and there is no direct access to the garden, so it's either buckets or wheelbarrow. Realistically it's buckets as the wheelbarrow would be difficult to operate in the meandering narrow corridor and couple of stairs up and down. I don't mind the excercize though.
Of course one can buy bagged substrate, but that would get very costly quite quickly even with 50-100m2 of patches.
This is a great idea and I was thinking about it. The only problem is as you mention., that my garden is in the back of the house on lets say small hill, so it would be very difficult to me to move it from front of the house. Plus I have stairs to garden and it makes things even more difficult. I am thinking about doing a composter. We will see. π€£
Btw how do you water/irrigate your plants?
It has been quite dry around here this year. A lot of rain just went around prague leaving us with just a few drops for months. So I've been looking into ollas (a terracota pots placed in the soil around the plants and filled with water) and thinking about experimenting about poking very very small holes in plastic bottles to do a similar thing but on cheap. The supply of plastic bottles is endless and terracota pots are kinda expensive if you need like 100 of the bigger ones.
Will see where the experiment leads me. Or it starts to rain a lot and the incetive will be gone. π€£
Today or tomorrow I will get drip watering system and I am very curiou how will it work. So fair it is just me and hose π€£π But true, it is extremly dry and idea with bottles is really good it works well. I plant tomatoes sideways and then they have more surface to absorb water, so I did not make bottles. π«π
