In Japan, plums (ume) are popular toping for rice 🍚 πŸ™

They are preserved to make umeboshi - very salty and sour flavor with a familiar taste of plum.

Umeboshi is added to rice to make onigiri πŸ™ (rice balls) or as topping on plain rice 🍚 bowl. It’s also used in a variety of dishes like pasta 🍝, tofu, chicken, fish, chips.

Most households have it in their fridge year-round.

If you do come across it, highly recommend you give it a try.
