It’s much like the VC world. Same language used but at least in the VC/Startup “scam” model there is an actual product & somewhat verifiable numbers. Although I’ve seen firsthand how they fudge the sales forecast numbers, especially when going for Series B money. Expectations don’t always match reality.

One of the big reasons I left was because of how full of shit a lot of people were. There were other reasons too. I might write a post about it sometime.
