We held off subjecting our kids to tablets & smartphones as long as we could.
I remember parents justifying their actions, saying that kids needed to learn how to use them. That it was necessary for their development & this new world.
At the same time I'd find 100's of random photos on my iPad that my 4yo daughter had taken. She figured out that she could access the camera while it was still locked. She remembered my wife's unlock pattern & would regularly open up her phone.
Where there is a desire or need, people will overcome any obstacles. They'll figure out a way to make it work, even if they don't understand what they're doing.
