Someone had a question recently, about a brand-new computer or phone and how to start using it immediately with a VPN, without having already downloaded one (and not being able to put a VPN on their WiFi router).

What if you enabled a Personal Hotspot on iPhone, and already had a VPN enabled on the iPhone, then you tether the brand new device to the iPhone’s WiFi hotspot before going online to download a VPN to the new device.

Would this work? Does a personal hotspot — when using a VPN — actually protect the privacy of the user who gets online via the tether?

Depends on the setup and VPN on the phone you run the hotspot from of course, but in principle it would work.

This is more or less the way I do it in Qubes, although lately I’ve been using Tor to set up new VMs with whatever goes into them. Used to run a VPN on the whole Qubes laptop but skipped that since I won’t be as aggressively fighting the Beast Machine as I wanted…

Oh well, at least I fuck all of their big data up the best I can! ;-)

Thanks for the input!

The setup i had in mind is a lot more noob, like Mullvad on iPhone lol
