Russia's mistake was not running blitzkrieg to Kiev in order to make Ukraine capitulate to its territorial demands. Instead they focused on securing the land bridge to Crimea and allowed an international response to be mounted that got them locked in a horrible meat grinder of a conflict for years. They had an opportunity to end things quickly when everybody was caught off guard and squandered it.
