Nick Szabo designed a mechanism for a decentralized digital currency he called Bit Gold in 1998. While Bit gold was not implemented, it is still considered a direct precursor to #Bitcoin.
The bitcoin protocol owes a lot to a large group of developers and Nick is one of the main ones. It is no wonder that among the suspects of being Satoshi Nakatomo is Nick.
