Pro: Umbrel apps get timely updates.

Pros: easy to use

Cons: not as flexible as bare metal, also docker sucks

Can you give me an example of the cons?

Can't run haven on it 🥲

I don’t even know what haven is…

Docker sucks in general or for such complex setups? What alternative do you prefer?

I like installing stuff directly on bare metal and use systemd, containers annoy me greatly

I see. Thanks!

Why does Docker suck?

Don’t, just run Start OS instead

Ok but Why?

I’ve tried Umbrel and many others , they have trouble keeping a 30 day uptime without me intervening. StartOS the only time it went down was when I had a power outage.

Pros:

- Tons of services!

- You can run it on portainer or add portainer on the Umbrel

- Cloudflare Tunnel makes it fairly easy to host dervices on the clearnet. They also now have NGINX, but I haven't tried it yet.

- Mealie recipe management can help you save sats on groceries.

- You can run it on a VM.

Cons:

- Backups are not easy.

- The official Umbrel hardware is limited to 2 TB of M.2 SSD. Start9 has up to 4 TB.

-16 GB of RAM compared 32 GB on Start9.

If Umbrel increases storage on the hardware, I'll buy one. I also thought about getting a 32GB mini computer and adding a 4 TB hard drive, but I'm getting to the point where I should just get a rack.
