There isn’t a perfect regimen of power. They didn’t want him holding too much power & disturbing the social order. All they did was make the problem worse. Who’s to say what he did was good or bad, it was “illegal.” Interesting relating it to current events. I don’t think they should have but I’m sure I have deficits in my historical knowledge
