I don't like anime and don't much understand the obsession with it.

it is more diverse (in the original meaning of the word) than movies or tv series. Cheaper to make with less restrictions and more risks taken. From an small creator perspective a possible process is straight forward: web novel -> light novel -> manga -> anime
