The war - EVERY WAR - is fought not between nations nor nation-states. War is: the ruling class assaulting (or worse) the powerless class. The ruling class won't punish "it's own" (as if people can be owned, without consent nor willingly) proles, but they will happily collude with others in the ruling class to cross-attack the powerless under each other's rule. War has always been this way. The bombs never fall on the homes of the ruling class. Think that's an accident?
