I've started judging tech by whether or not it has a "CEO" or someone capable of controlling the tech.
There are examples of good technologies with decent leaders (Signal) but for how long? That's always the question. Signal, for example, is structured such that it's only a matter of time before it's corrupted.
I wish they'd make it easier for people to decentralize the network. You can do it, but you essentially limit yourself to a silo. We should be able to expand the network beyond the segment controlled by Signal.
The funding is also bizarre. It seems that they take donations and grants to support the service, yet they have a loan to pay back over time. That's a pretty fragile model. Wouldn't it be better to let people fund their own servers if they want to? I'm willing to do that, but I wouldn't be able to connect with people as easily with how things are.
Yes, I know there are alternatives, and I couldn't convince any of my friends and family to deal with them. I'm just using Signal as an example.
Centralization of tech has many consequences (some are good in the short term).
