i always thought it was weird that a copy right of papers transfer to journals from authors once they get published.

scientists seem to think it’s silly but they still do because of academia career ladder, thus this culture hasn’t died. they are smart people but that doesn’t mean they are changers of systems. Also peer-review could be very biased.
