They were going to make sonic look like the left picture when they released a trailer but everyone freaked out because it looks nothing like him. Eventually the studio caved and spent a year redoing the whole movie with new look.
It's pretty funny to have someone with a shadow the hedgehog profile picture come and explain the lore.
