Why would anybody but a journalist (see: wood-chipper fodder) assume the money isn't going to engineers who can secure a competitive-hardware coup?

Why would Apple release a chatbot? Most journalists in mainstream who write about Apple have little understanding of how the company operates. They never chase trends. This idea that they’re behind in AI because everyone else has a chatbot is silly. How would a ChatGPT competitor improve their user experience?
