So I am checking out Signal, so in order to add a contact you have to share your phone number with someone? User names are not a thing? For instance, if I wanted to connect with someone on nostr, we would have to exchange phone numbers? That kinda sucks. I guess this was more for keeping chats with IRL friends private?

Yeah…

But Signal is still great in my opinion

That's essentially the gist of it. It was great because functioned as a regular text messaging app for those that didn't have signal, but now they're phasing out that feature and is going to basically be another chat app to add on

Think of it like this: they know the phone numbers you're connecting with but all the messages/calls are encrypted (as long as the other person also uses Signal). Session uses Signal's source code if you're looking for an option without the need to enter your phone number.

Yes, that's the biggest weakness. Basically for upgrading the security of your SMS against eavesdropping.

I think you could consider getting a phone number that isn’t associated with you. If you need help…

From a privacy perspective it's worse than that. Shares a number and a profile name.
