I did a really shit job explaining to my GF the reasons why Bitcoin can only ever have 21 million coins.

Anyone got a simple, succinct explanation for this?

The goal is to have it easy enough that even she could use it to explain the supply cap to people.

The software has this set as the maximum amount.

In order to change this amount everyone that owns Bitcoin would have to willingly agree to be stolen from.

Human nature ensures that there will never be more than 21 million.
