During the reign of Emperor Licinius, Ermil, a deacon, and Stratonic, a guard, were arrested for their Christian faith. Stratonic, a friend of Ermil, was tortured in an attempt to make him deny Christ. Seeing Stratonic's unwavering faith, Ermil openly confessed his own belief, choosing to suffer alongside his friend. They were brutally tortured, then cast into the Ister River (Danube) after three days. Their bodies were later found, miraculously intact, and buried.
