Quite a while back someone mentioned that relays were about to start requiring POW to post, and I got quite concerned that I wouldn't be able to post anymore so I added the POW feature in about an hour. Here we are almost 2 months later and no relay that I'm aware of requires POW.

BTW: I divide up the space of 64-bit numbers into N sections (N=number of cores) and start one thread for each that sequentially scans through their section of possible nonces, with the nonce attempt being the next number, and when the signature has the requisite leading zeroes, it signals success so that all the threads stop.

That's only because you're a visionary ahead of your time.

PoW will, sooner or later, be necessary.

The world hasn't figured it out yet.

Its what zaps try to solve now in a shiny over-hyped roundabout way.

Yesterday #[4] brought up “pay to follow”… now you’re making me think about “pay to post”.

Could be interesting to try approach of having relay where you need to pay x sats to access and read… and then also every post costs y sats to send.

In this environment likes and retweets would be very useful - museum like experience.

There is a relay that requires a pubkey to have a PoW minimum of N - I forget the threshold and url.

It’s difficult as I think PoW to $ calculations are hard. And then server ROI vs deplete phone battery ROI to generate a PoW gives asymmetry.

Which is why I liked PoW aggregation - sum of your PoW over time. But a spammer persistent enough can also build free PoW due to randomness or they can spend.

It may end up more of an indicator rather than a single value truth test.

There are ways to buy PoW for your notes.

You can delegate mining to someone else, no need to mine yourself.

See NIP-13.

Interesting!

I’ve been using rana to mine for vanity pubKeys. Perhaps I should add PoW in there as well.

Will there be nostr spam ASICs one day? 🤔
