As long as the laptop/desktop meets the minimum requirements, it'll do.

The 10 year old computer will work find if it can always be connected to the internet and is running 4gb (pref 8gb) of ram.
One of the benefits of raspberry pi is there is no wireless attack vector. If it’s a laptop that has an Ethernet port you can limit attack vectors by removing the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip. Sounds intimidating but is something a novice diy can do by gooogling.
Why would someone wirelessly attack my node? Wouldn't they need to be close it my house? What could they gain?
