It's about the contrast between theonomy and autonomy. The church largely wants to function autonomously, without paying attention to what God said in the OT because that's all been done away with apparently.

Many evangelicals shudder at the idea of the laws of a nation reflecting God's law.

Don't conflate "hating God's law" with "rejecting theonomy/theocracy." God's law for the common/provisional kingdom is limited to the lex talionis (law of retribution).
