Why do we have to use VPNs? Internet failed to account for privacy when it was created imo.

Is there no way to make a new protocol that is more private and we don't need vpns?

We’re getting there with Lightning network. Paysend messages can include encrypted payloads. Sphinx used this for its messaging protocol.

Thats a bit of an inefficient approach, requires the endpoints to use lightning, and bolt on encryption after the fact the same as secure tunnels are done for http. To that end, Tor proxies are an improvement.

ToR is best-effort by volunteers. Lightning nodes have a path to profitability. I predict that this incentive-compatibility is more likely to yield higher quality solutions… eventually.

That's pretty cool!

What’s wrong with pressing connect on vpn

Don't trust the service I suppose.

well you can't design an internet protocol including such privacy.

At the bottom layer, there is a packet : an envelope with a message.

Even if the message is encrypted, the packet must have a destination and a return adress. How else are you going to know where to move that message to and from using routers ?

You may play clever movement games, but at the end of the day, your ISP WILL HAVE TO deliver that package to you.

The consequence of wires and routers are simply that privacy must be had at a higher level and that you have to construct it with the ultimate fact that your ISP, like a postman, will come to your house with a bunch of packets adressed to you.
