#TodayInHistory, in 1961, East Germany closed the border between the eastern & western sectors of Berlin to prevent its inhabitants escape to the West. This became known as “The Berlin Wall” as they began to fortify and guard it and it represented the ideological divide between East Germany (Communism) & West Germany (Democracy/Capitalism). It was also referred to as the physical representation of the “Iron Curtain”, a term coined by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

The Berlin Wall served as a physical manifestation of the ideological divide between East and West during the Cold War. It symbolized the contrasting political systems and the struggle between communism and democracy.

The wall stood for nearly 30 years until it was torn down in 1989 during a wave of democratization and protests that swept through Eastern Europe. Its fall marked a pivotal event in world history and the beginning of the end of communism in Central and Eastern Europe.
