I used to make my own compost and would put cardboard into the compost. Broke down brilliantly. Yes contributes as carbon. I called it brown material, similar to leaves and woodchips. Its basically fungal food, fungi love it.
You mentioned burning your cardboard in this episode. We used to do that as well. However, cardboard is an excellent source of carbon for a garden. You add it and give mycillium some fodder and can greatly improve your soil.
