Just found out about this Orthodox Christian punk zine called Death to the World ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€

'Youโ€™re at a punk show. Someone dressed in all black hands you a bunch of black-and-white pages stapled together. Death to the World, says the cover. When you get home and open it up, youโ€™re greeted by unrelenting doom:

The last true rebellion is death to the world.

To be crucified to the world and the world to us.

...In 1990, Justin Marler played guitar on the first album of the stoner doom metal band Sleep. In 1991, he felt the tug of Orthodoxy. He left Sleep to join St. Herman of Alaska monastery in Northern California, where he became Monk John Marler. โ€œThere are a lot of similarities between the punk lifestyle and the monk lifestyle,โ€ ..'

โ€œAs believers, our fasting and abstinence from food are not enough. Fasting must extend to many other aspects of our lives. In the past, fasting of the eyes from impurity was not emphasized as strongly because images were not as prevalent as they are today. Moreover, the direct and explicit nature of sin was more apparent then.

We need to introduce ascetic practices related to the use of modern media and information consumption. We might consider setting specific times for information consumption, limiting it before and after receiving Holy Communion and on fasting days, utilizing this time for prayer, beneficial reading, or acts of love. โ€œ

Reminds me of digital liturgies pod nostr:npub14f0xen78ed7rgvw39v82fwp7tv65yasz2gsgpf4gvxy4q5nlsydsk37k3l nostr:npub1jlrs53pkdfjnts29kveljul2sm0actt6n8dxrrzqcersttvcuv3qdjynqn

How did you find that? Super interesting.

๐Ÿ‘€

Their merch and aesthetic generally is so good ๐Ÿ‘€

Pity all their past issues are sold out (available as digital copies but would prefer print)

This is so rad

It is true that visuals have become a principal means distraction from the Word. Romans 10.17.

few

are chosen

Itโ€™s good

Have you ever seen an Orthodox street preacher / stall / evangelism? I haven't, but it's perhaps not so much of a thing in the UK. Is there a reason for this?

Come to think of it I don't think I've seen a Catholic church do this either, maybe ๐Ÿค”

The only thing I've heard of something remotely like this is a zine/stall at punk shows:
