I haven't done any that size (though I've created charts in that range). The biggest for me is about 200 by 300, on 18 count. (I've done that size on 22 over one intersection. Can't do blended colors, though.)

I do use blended colors and usually whole stitches. With my own charts, there's enough to make it easier. (Green and purple = blue-gray!)
I did one with half stitches, though - a view of the Grand canyon, in the "National Park Needlework" series, and it's gorgeous. The blended threads are the texture of the ground and the rocks.
