St. John the Wallachian, a Romanian soldier, was captured by the Tatars and sold as a slave to a Turkish master who tried to force him to convert to Islam. John steadfastly refused, clinging to his Christian faith despite brutal beatings and threats. His master, enraged by John's unwavering resolve, eventually had him beheaded for his faith in 1662, in Crimea.
