Congo forward Cédric Bakambu spotlights armed violence in his country while playing at Africa Cup

==========

Congo forward Cédric Bakambu is using his platform at the Africa Cup of Nations to bring attention to the armed violence in the east of Congo. Bakambu highlighted the human rights abuses in Congo and called for the world to put the same energy into addressing the situation as they do for the Africa Cup. Eastern Congo has been plagued by armed violence for decades, with over 120 groups fighting for power and resources. The conflict escalated in late 2021 when the rebel group M23 resurfaced and initiated attacks. Bakambu mentioned that he tries to help locally in Congo through his foundation, but acknowledges that it will never be enough. Congo will face Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup semifinals, with the winner advancing to the final against Nigeria or South Africa. The Leopards had not won a game in regulation time until their quarterfinal victory over Guinea. Congo has won two Africa Cup titles, with the last one in 1974.
