I agree that the on device toolkit is nice, but translating publicly accessible information via open source software on a remote server is not what I would classify as super shady.

The privacy conscious should probably toggle DMs to off, but offering DeepL as an option is a objectively better experience, considering how bad both ML Kit and Libre’s translations are.

How do you know they are running the same software that was made open source without any changes? I have lived long enough to not trust these types of setup without a full contract to look at. And frankly, DeepL doesn't seem much better in the usually poorly written nostr messages.
