and one of the problems of LN is that if you arent sending to the pubkey, you need a separate mechanism to route the payment to that pubkey

Yes, it does and has. There isore liquidity, the nodes have figured out having 7 gazillion channels isn't better than a few large ones, and protocol/wallet improvements have been massive.
That routing also improves privacy, which makes this an absolutely terrible argument in this context lol

it is extremely easy to run a Tor node and its something credible institutions can do

Tor doesnt leak amounts to the node as information goes by
Tor leaks info too, such as volume of requests
That can be used for fingerprinting services and is a good reason to regularly switch to a new circuit

and the UX hurdle isnt just the node, its managing liquidity to make the payments you want to make, without locking up your generational wealth in hot wallets.

Lots of people sell channels these days, that's a great l, easy way to get inbound capacity without locking up any of your generational wealth anywhere
And once you have inbound capacity, getting outbound capacity is as simple as hitting Receive
