Someone who understands this better than me, why are the block times so close together? #asknostr #bitcoin #blockchain

Random is random. The next few blocks will probably be very far apart.

The current difficulty adjustment is +2.8%, 39 blocks ahead of the previous +1.43%. Hashrate is increasing.

if random is random the second sentence doesn’t make sense

They might be they might not be. Eventually we'll have long waits between blocks to bring the average time back to around 10 minutes. Though it's more closer to 9.8 right?

nope. if the avg block mined until the next difficulty adjustment is 9.8 min then the math problem to guess blocks for next 2016 blocks will simply be harder to solve

It's random. Sometimes that happens.

The difficulty is dynamically set by the network every 2 weeks such that it targets a block every 10 minutes, but because of the completely random nature or proof of work, sometimes we get blocks flowing immediately after one another, and other times we get almost a 60 minute gap between blocks.

If the average time between blocks for a given 2 week mining epoch < 10 minutes, difficulty increases. If the average > 10 minutes, difficulty decreases. Essentially the network is constantly in search oof equilibrium.

what do you mean by close?

from that picture the diff between blocks ranges fro ~30-70%
