I find myself agreeing with a lot of the Christian traditionalist views I read here but I have to make sure I don’t get caught up in it too much. ANY belief system is a crutch. Devotion to God is the absence of beliefs, IMO, it’s getting in tune with the experience of life which is God. Beliefs are Satan’s work, the tree of knowledge, so to speak. You form a belief to comfort yourself from the terrifying prospect of total doubt which is God. You cower before the might of the raw experience and run to the safety of a mantra, a book or a set of mental propositions and images that makes you feel better. But as Robert Frost said, “The only way out is through.”
Discussion
Do you believe if you let go of an object in your hand, it will travel towards the ground? Just want to make sure you are holding any of those pesky demonic 'beliefs' 🤣
Aren't* me no spell good when tired 😴
You actually carry around that proposition in your head, or do you just know the truth of it without having to do so?
There is no way for me to *know* the external world will respond to actions tomorrow the way it does today. That is why it is a belief, where I take it to be true or accept that it is probably true. Do you disagree?
The word fact is strange as science constantly corrects previous mistakes and the word know is strange as there very few things that can be *known*.
Hopefully I explained my position in a clear manner.
you don’t know anything with certainty, you don’t know you won’t have a heart attack in five minutes, and yet you don’t entertain the proposition in your mind “I probably won’t have a heart attack in five minutes.” These “beliefs” are not beliefs so much as internal knowledge insofar as knowledge is always imperfect.
Beliefs. Knowledge. Justified true belief. Justified knowledge.
All of that is to say you cannot be certain and so you go through life assigning probabilities whether consciously or subconsciously.
I think you are just hung up on the word belief. You seem to have a strange aversion to it. I don't quite get it personally with all due respect. To have knowledge without being 100% certain is to, in essence, believe something.
Almost all knowledge is a belief of some sort. 🫡
not interested in a semantic debate. If you can’t see the difference between ideology and religion vs “beliefs” you have about whether your feet will land correctly on your next walking step, I don’t think we’re gonna get anywhere.
I only originally commented because I thought the phrase "beliefs are Satans work" was funny. I did not mean to upset you.
Yes I see a difference in believing in a creator versus where your foot will land. Both use reasoning but one is based on previous empirical data and a lot of experience.
I'm agnostic. I understand different people use different reasoning for deciding what they believe about a creator. Again, wasn't trying to make you upset. 🤙🤝
No problem! Not upset — just wanted to stay on topic!
Thats an interesting belief system you have
Reason is not exclusive wishful thinking. That's why libertarians and some classical liberals pushed natural law so much
Reasoning isn’t belief
The trick is that reason is mostly unknown. We deal everyday only with poor microscopic nuggets of reason that almost never complete the real landscape of our situation in the course of our lives.
Iusnaturalists including Aquinas say that natural rights are like an onion. You keep delving inside and you find more and more
