Jesus was all about decentralization. The original churches were small local fellowships meeting in homes with no centralized authority controlling them. There were traveling preachers who would establish churches and eventually appoint local unpaid elders to lead the churches. Unfortunately, when Christianity became legal in the Roman Empire, the churches were herded into former temples and a hierarchy developed which became easy to corrupt and control by kings and political leaders.
