The "problem" isn't that the LLM creators don't know how to make micropayments. They just don't want to.

Much easier to pretend there are unsolved problems with payment processing and with identifying "who said it first" to know who to pay.

I suspect we'll be seeing a lot more good content behind paywalls as people try to recoup lost ad revenue

I tend to side with you, thats a big tech approach, grow as big as you can and screw as many people over in the process and ask for permission later/apologise/come up with some lame as solution/non-solution

Ad revenue for content is already pretty shitty, very few websites and individual bloggers can pay the bills with only some network display ads and with LLMs pushing users to remain their service and never leaving to other sites, that only reduces their chance of revenue

Even the paywall could be done with Lightning and LLMs that need this content could provide a standard response and one with paid sources.

Agreed there. I remember back in the early bitcoin days it was being promoted as an option for micropayments.

Shame that sort of thing hasn't taken off :(
