The stainless steel sides probably do provide a little more protection against shrapnel relative to other pickups, but they should probably at least partially cover the massive windows with some protection.

there's some company selling kits to fit them out with all kinds of armor

would be pretty awesome having all the IED and mad max style slitted windscreen going on haha

also, new kind of infrastructure attack would be shooting thermite rounds into the battery to make it start burning

The stainless steel, yes, slightly. It withstands 9mm, but not higher velocity rifle rounds. It will probably do OK against shrapnel from artillery rounds.
