Relays are the backbone of the nostr protocol. Clients send and receive notes (and other stuff) through relays.
Do I need to add relays by myself? Or what?
You can. Most clients connect you to the biggest free relays, and that's fine for a while. I've only added a few smaller relays to make sure I stay connected with a few people that I want to ensure that I see all their posts. Things are working fine now, so don't worry about it yet. Learn more, enjoy figuring things out, then start changing a few things.
Relays store the actual data and clients fetch this data or post new to them.
Each relay has its own individual policies about what is allowed and what's not.
