The premise seems to be that the primary function of debate is to persuade listeners rather than solidify participants' ideas. I agree though that the spark lasts longer in a free market of ideas, relatively free of, or at least not actively incentivizing bad actors, in which suffering caused by participation is minimal. I would add that attrition is proportional to the percentage of participants that are not authentic humans acting in good faith.
