I can run just about any old school lathe or mill. I do badly want to build my own shop.

Yup! Definitely. Especially for one offs.
We had a one off aircraft casting.
The foundry would not cast another. And we needed to adjust it but it was a little risky on the CNC. So we actually hand ground it to bring it into conformance. It worked.
Old school saved the day.
